Caravanning in the wild - how to ensure safety?

Any fan of travel and campervans will surely admit that there is nothing more special than spending time in the middle of beautiful nature, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, in the company of your favourite people. Campervans and caravans give us the freedom of movement and comfort on the road, but one of the most important things to consider when travelling wild in a caravan or campervan is safety. We often get questions about what safety features we use, whether such travel is safe and whether we leave the caravan alone in a wild place. We have this impression that we are sometimes even safer in the wild than among people or on large campsites.

The issue of security varies from country to country, so it is advisable to prepare in advance in such a way that you feel comfortable and relaxed during your trip, especially when we leave our mobile home where we are staying and go wandering and exploring in unknown surroundings. We would like to introduce you to the practical solutions we use on a daily basis during our travels of several months and which enable us to travel with peace of mind.

Double lock on the door to prevent theft

In addition to the original lock (which is easily forced) we use a security device on the door FIAMMA Safe Door And whenever we go out, we lock the door with two locks. This is a fairly common solution that we often see in campervans and vans on the road.

Wireless cameras - peace of mind on trips

We recommend the set 5 EUFY SECURITY wireless cameras. The cameras give us the most peace of mind, as we can always get a glimpse of what is happening around the caravan while we are away. For the cameras, we have a separate app on the phone, Which sends us notifications when it detects movement. We have a set of 5 cameras - 4 we use outside on the four sides of the trailer on special mounts and one inside. The internal camera also works perfectly for us when we leave the dogs alone in the trailer for a while. Then we can take a peek to see if they are messing around and if they are OK. To operate the cameras, we need access to Internet - we have a permanent router in the caravan, into which we insert an Internet card purchased in the relevant country. Our WiFi is connected to a separate power circuit, so it always works even if the electricity in the caravan is switched off. Together with the cameras you get stickers indicating 24-hour monitoringwhich you should also stick on your trailer.

Lock the trailer wheel when you are not around

Although it is more common for equipment to be stolen from inside a caravan than for the whole caravan to be stolen, it is worth thinking ahead. A good solution is to lockable trailer wheel lock. We strongly associate this safety feature with the lock you get on the wheel for improper parking 😉 A simple action that gives you extra security. In addition, together with the wheel, we always lock the hitch of our mobile home with a safety features on the ride stabiliser. It's a small, metal, lockable safety device on the ALKO, which is a trailer hitch with stabiliser. An accessory that we bought together with the trailer.

Narcogas sensor - don't let your vigilance lull you to sleep

In some countries, including Spain, there have been cases of campervans being robbed at night after allowing sleeping narcogas inside. After such stories, we decided to buy TRIGAS narcogas sensor,  which we switch on at night to sleep soundly. The sensor is fitted with an alarm and runs on 12V.

An original idea with music - are you in?

An interesting idea for securing a caravan or motorhome is to leaving music on inside while you are away. That way, when someone approaches, they will think someone is inside and think a few times before they want to do something wrong.

Choose places with your head

This is the last, but in our opinion one of the most important points. Throughout the expedition, you must not lose your head. First we avoid big cities and large concentrations of people. We use campsites around cities such as Paris or Madrid. We also read information about the country or city in question on the Internet beforehand - this is how we know, for example, that the Catalonia region and the Barcelona area in Spain are particularly dangerous, and we avoid them completely. When using apps such as Park4Night, we also we pay attention to reviews of a place and as soon as they raise our doubts, we abandon the place. Likewise, if, on arrival at a place, we feel that something is not right and there are suspicious people around or the area looks dangerous, we leave and look for a quiet overnight stay. We always make a cool assessment of the place and analyse the situation.

Of course, despite all precautions, various situations can happen in life and we cannot foresee everything. However, It is worth ensuring peace of mind beforehand and being confident that you have done everything to prevent dangerous situations.

P.S Do you travel with your dog(s)? 🙂 They are the best protection - they will always alert you when someone is approaching
